Several months ago, I took my child to the emergency room. We were there several hours. Several Doctors looked at my child but did not run any tests or take any x-rays. Instead they just gave me a referral to another doctor. I received a bill for several thousand dollars. I had medicaid at the time but now I don't. Even though I no longer qualify for medicaid, I still cannot pay that kind of a bill. Is there anything I can do to get them to reduce the bill or to go ahead and file it with medicaid?

If you were covered by medicaid at the time of the treatment, then you can still submit the bill to them.

I didn't know that you could do this yourself. How do you go about it?

You make a copy of the bill, making sure to include any proper identification. You put it in an evelope, address it, put a stamp on it, and drop it in the mail.
