Can a highschool coach hand out failing grades for quitting a sport?
Here is a recap: My child is in a class called "team sports" it is offered to football candidates each year. He has played football for this school his 4 years of high school. This year, his senoir year, he elected to quit the team with 3 games left in the season. He told the coach he was quitting, coach said , I think you should think about it. He thought about it and decided to quit. When he got his 9 week grade, he had a failing grade in team sports. he ask the coach why and coach said because you quit, you deserve it. I discussed it with the school principle who agreed with the coach. No satisfaction there. We contacted the school board who told us that the school will mail out letters as to why students got a failing grade for quitting football. We received the letter which just stated that students who quit the team will receive a failing grade. This was all after the fact. I am sure he would of stuck it out 3 more games had he known he would receive this grade. Now the coach is insisting that all parents sign and return this letter. I do not want to sign this letter because it is after the fact. In my opinion this should have been sent out and signed by both student and parents before he elected to play football. In his prior 3 years of football there, no child has ever received a failing grade for quitting a sport so this was a total shock. Now the coach is telling all students that if this letter is not signed and returned by Monday they will have to run. What is your advice?
Thank You in advance

The class is offered to football candidates.

Your son took the class.

Your son was a football candidate.

Your son quit football.

Therefore, unless there are other class requirements you have not mentioned, he quit the class.

He deserves the failing grade the same as if he had quit Life Science more than half-way through the semester.

other requirments

Oh there i a long list of other requirments fo the class. There are also kids in the class that don't actually play on the team. Just a few of the other requirments are weight training, running, conditioning and keeping feild house clean which he did after he quit. Please reply

There is no way anyone here can give you a definate answer since we do not attend that school, do not have the policies of the school board in front of us and can't interview the parties involved.

If you feel like pursuing this, then contact the school board at the district level.

I doubt it will get you anywhere but that's your next option.

What did your son do after he quit? Did he help the other players or coaches, or help out in the locker room (give out towels, clean up, etc.), or did he just not show up anymore?
