What is the name of your state? Virginia

What is it called when a professor gives a failing grade on a project such as a research paper that is far below the student's actual academic performance level on it? On what grounds could this grade be justified? How can this be resolved (outside of the school) if it is a private institution?

I don't think it can be resolved outside of school. What grounds would you have?

How do you know you deserve a higher grade? Since it was a paper/presentation or something that required subjective judgment, I don't think you will get it changed.

Have you talked with the professor? He or she can explain why you got a lower grade. Just be very nice and you will likely get some information. Maybe she or he will even give you pointers for the next time you incur such an assignment.

If that doesn't work and you still feel you should have a higher grade, go to the dean.
