I was recently falsely accused of retail theft by a grocery store chain. When I left the store I was followed by an employee who recorded the tag numbers on my car. The store then called the police and gave them my description and tag numbers and told them that I had left without paying. I had never been asked to produce a receipt and I had been regularly shopping at this store for a number of years. The police then came to my house while I was not there. They proceeded to question my wife and son about what I looked like and what kind of car I drove. They were concerned that I had been involved in an accident and only after repeatedly asking the officer why he wanted this information, did he tell them that I had left the store without paying. The officer then had my wife contact me by cell phone and demand that I return home with my receipt. I returned home and showed the officer my receipt. I then returned to the store with the officer. The receipt was given to a store employee and I was left with the officer to wait while a lengthy discussion occurred between several store employees. At the end of the discussion the "store director" approached me with the statement, "I must really apologize for the idiots that work for me", and proceeded to give me a gift certificate for approximately the amount of the purchase. I would like to know if I have any recourse for the distress this situation caused my wife and son, the embarrassment of having a police cruiser arrive at my house, having my wife and son questioned, taking me away from what I was doing and demanding that I return home, being questioned on the street in front of my house, being returned to the store with the police, and having to stand in the lobby of the store with the police until the "apology" from the store director. Neither I nor my wife or son has felt comfortable returning to the store since this incidence.
