PA.

I received an ad in the mail for a local Gym membership and really want to subscribe to it. The coupon is very clear, it states $289 for two years of membership, nothing about any other type of charges at all; not even anything like “other charges may apply”, truly nothing besides the offer. When I went to sign up for it, I was told about an additional $99 fee for first time members, even though this coupon is only open to first time members. You'd think that fee would have to be on the coupon, otherwise I'd assume it's wrapped into the $289. I spoke with the manager and got no help there. Then I spoke to the corporate headquarters, but they said they have no control over individual franchises. Is this false advertising that although they say $289 for two years, acknowledge there are no other charges mentioned on the ad, but insist on charging an additional $99? Is there anything I can do? I want to sign up (the offer is over on the 24th), but don’t like being taken advantage of. Could I pay the $389 and sue them for the $100? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Chris

Thank you seniorjudge for your feedback. Ignoring this gym scenario, I have two questions. If this is not false advertising, could someone please provide an example of something that is? The other is what can a consumer do when a false advertising situation occurs? Thank you for your help.

Good grief, does this gym give out free crack or something? There are no other gyms you can get to that aren't out to rip you off? Anyway, call your state's consumer protection department and file a report. That's about all you can do, unless you happen to own your own television station (or if you're Geraldo Rivera) and you feel like doing an expose.

Thanks You Are Guilty for you feedback as well. I will follow up with the consumer protection department and see if anything comes from it. If anyone has anything else to add please feel free to.
