I falsely reported a real theft. Basically I lied about the circumstances under which the money was stolen. I had went to buy pot, but instead the woman took off with the money. When the cops arrived I told them I had been there to borrow someone else some money and that the woman took my money and ran. After searching her house they found crack and told me to go home that they had to take care of that situation. They said they would be in touch. That same evening they showed questioning me about the crack, so I told them my real reason for being there to buy pot and that I did not do crack. They then told told me that misreporting the theft of $250.00 was classified as a felony. However because I had been honest when requestioned they said they would not charge me. The next day though they called me downtown and threatened to charge me with the felony if I would'nt cooperate as an informant. At the time I agreed and signed a form under fear of jail time. I have a clean record and had no idea that lying was a felony. Is there anything I can do? I have'nt formally been charged, but my detective keeps holding it over me! Help!?!? Maria

I am a law school graduate. What I offer is mere information, not to be construed as forming an attorney client relationship.

Call a criminal defense attorney. DONT EVER TALK TO THEM AGAIN: ask them if they are charging you, then tell them to call your lawyer instead.

So, now go get a lawyer. You play, you must pay.
