I live in NY State and my Great-Aunt left me her house in her will when she died. I can't afford to live in the house and would like to sell it. However, my family is threating to sue me if I sell it. Can they legally sue me or prevent me from selling the house and taking the money and buying a place that I can afford? Or do I need to give the money or sign the house over to them? The deed is only in my name but my mother thinks because she has helped me with the taxes she is entittled to the house and control what I do with it. Please help. I don't know if I would need a lawyer for this or not.

at the very lest i would contact a lawyer to write your family a nice letter tell them to back off. If its only your name on the deed then its yours to do as you please. Tell your family if they want to keep the house in the family to buy it form you for fair market price.

If you are the only person listed on the deed, you can sell the house without permission from anyone.

If your mother helped with the taxes then she can only sue you for the portion of money that she paid in taxes. You may be able to argue it was a gift, etc.

Don't sign the house over to anyone. It sounds to me like your family is jealous of your inheritance and are trying to threaten you so that they can have a portion of it. Don't let them.

Perhaps if you repay your mom what she spent to help you with the taxes when you sell the place, that will smooth things over. Or perhaps mom wants to buy the house from you formally (for the fair market value).
