OK the local Big-O (tire place) did a brake inspection on my 1985 Nissan 300zx turbo. Here being New Mexico. They told me that I had 20 percent left on the rear brake pads, and that they should be replaced soon. I specifically insisted upon the use of a torque wrench for the tightening of my wheel lug nuts- as this buisness is known for its over tightening of bolts. They did use the torque wrech, but it seemed as though excessive force was being used when tightening the bolts (the worker was leaning whole heartedly on the end of the ratchet), I noticed this especially on the rear left wheel, as I was standing in the rear of the car. After some procrastination I got some brake pads from Checker Auto, and installed them with my fellow students and instructor in Auto Mechanics class. Though I was not present for the initial removal of the wheels, one of the first subjects reguarding the prociedure that came up was how tight the lug nuts were, notely the left rear (in fact the use of a four foot breaker bar was needed, and two people at once had to pull on it). now as is prociedure the rotors are turned to remove any glazing, the left rear rotor was considerably warped (a term used for when the rotor is not strait), warping is known to have been caused by overly tightened lug nuts. further more the pads that were suposed to be replaced still had aproximately 60-70 percent left on them. Big O refuses any liability for this rotor- which could cost as much as 90 dollars. can they be held accountable? just another tid bit of information, a different worker tightened the left side then the left side, and my car was taken in toward the end of the day- lazy workers.
