Fees for towed vehicle!

I sold my old truck about a year ago to a (friend).He never did the proper paper work at the DMV though. I did not find this out until about 2 months ago. It was then I recieved a letter from a towing company that my truck had been towed off of an apartment owners property and that I showed up as the registered owner. Ughhhhhhhh!!! Apparently the truck went to another person whom my friend "Sold" the truck to and it was towed off the property where this other person lived. The towing company wants $800.00 plus dollars for the fee for keeping it at their site.It has now gone to a collection agency. What is my best option at this point?

Write to the collection people and tell them that the truck was sold before it was towed. Give them a copy of the transfer papers. What you have no papers?
