On April 5th i was in a car accident.(Alb. N.M.)

1) I have had the car for two weeks at he time of the accident.
2) the previous owner has yet to mail me the title to the car. consequently i have no insurance.

the accident happened in a parking lot. i was pulling out of a parking space, i looked behind me to see if it was clear, it was clear. then i put it in reverse and hit a truck that i cant be sure wasnt also in motion.

What should i do?
my fist instinct was to pay for the other drivers damage out of pocket because the other drivers damage is completely cosmetic, my broken tail light looks far worse than their bent plastic bumper moulding.
what are my options?
the other driver has since called me repeatedly and visited me wanting me to pay immediately.

First, did the former owner have insurance on the car? and was it in effect at the time of the incident? If so, turn in a claim.

If you are going to pay the other driver, which I think in your case is a good idea in the absence of coverage, make sure you get a full and complete release of all claims.

Once this is done, go out and get the title changed and get insurance coverage.
