My boyfriend and I have been living together for 5 years. In the past we have filed separately because I can file head of household which, obviously, works out better for me. We were married overseas 5 years ago but never got around to making it official in the states. My accountant advised me to check into the common law rules for the state of South Carolina but I am unable to find info on the internet. How should we file this year so that we aren't in trouble with the IRS?
Thank you very much.
