I live in CA. I was duped into working for a marketing firm, door-to-door. I found this out and found out other information after my training. I am in the process of trying to talk to my manager, but have been unable to contact her, since she is always in meetings or busy. During this time I have been trying to collect my first check for my paid training. I was told I would be paid on Monday, then Wednesday, then Thursday (due to fedex I'm told), and I tried stopping by today and can't get in touch with her, and she is the only one who has access to the checks. I am now frustrated and going to give my formal resignation. I figure this will get me my check faster than trying to get in contact with her.

I need to find out what does the law state as to how soon after resigning does a final paycheck have to be given to me. I am considered a independent contracter. Does this change in any way my rights to my final paycheck?

Yes, your status as an IC changes things considerably. If they don't pay you, then your option is to file a claim in small claims court for your wages. You are free to call CA's Labor Board and confirm that though.
