What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? My mom was approached by a family friend to invest money in a start-up company. She gave him $50,000 to invest and in turn he send her a promissory note in the mail a few days later. He told her he can guarantee her a 6% return on her money. She was 82 yrs. of age at the time. It is almost 3 yrs. later and she has not received any money back and does not want to admit she got ripped off by a long time family friend. I do not have access to a lawyer and neither does she so I am writing in the hopes someone out there can tell me if she has a legal chance to get her money back or if she got ripped off with no legal recourse. Please help!!! Thank you in advance.

Does this start-up company she invested in actually exist? Realistically, your mother will probably never see that money again.

Since you intentionally ignored the request that you supply the name of your state since state laws differ, it's logical to conclude that you don't live in the U.S.

U.S. law only!
