What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

Tx

I'm a writer/artist who uses pen names, many of them common. Can I use my fingerprint as proof of of ownership by putting it next to 'copyright 2012' in my books?

You don't have to put anything in the book assert copyright. The requirement for that went out in 1989 when the US finally ratified Berne.
Further, the Copyright office allows you to use pseudonyms on registrations: http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl101.html

Nothing you put in the book "proves" ownership anyhow.
