Hi,

I live in Tennessee, and my husband and I were supposed to move into a new apartment June 15 (the lease on the apartment we live in now will expire June 30). While watching the news yesterday we found out that the building we were supposed to move into had been completely destroyed by fire (we confirmed this with the complex this morning, and our unit is destroyed). While nothing has been decided yet, of course, with our new complex--where they will put those who were displaced and where we will go), we were wondering who is responsible for us now--for technically, we are homeless after June 30. What are our options? Can we be placed ahead of others in our new complex (assuming there are other apartments available and the others have been taken care of first), or can they place us in another complex with the same rent and deals that we were supposed to have? We have placed a deposit with them, and our application has been approved, but we were not supposed to sign a lease until June 15.

Thanks.

No apartment * No lease

Rent another apt. Check your lease, if landlord/mgmt can't deliver the apt, they are not responsible for getting you another unit and you are not responsible for paying rent. Request refund of your deposit or any monies you have paid and go rent elsewhere.
