I have worked at a Public Library in a large city in California for the past five years. A few months ago I accepted a position with another library system who contracts for cubicle space(and I'm not sure what else) in the city's library.

One morning I came in to work at the second job and there was a disturbing message on the answering machine from my supervisor's husband. My supervisor also speaks up at one point to correct him.

The message is not overtly threatening. Her husband tells me he's calling to express his disappointment and anger, he curses(though not at me), and he raises his voice.

Nine days after I sent my supervisor's boss a copy of the message and two weeks before I would have gotten vacation pay they fired me.

I was told I was being fired because since day one my job performance has not been up to their standards, yet I have documents from them commending me on my job performance - using phrasess such as "excellent job".

I was emplyed at will AND I was two weeks away from completing my probationary period.

Up till now I had a good reputation at the library. I have enthusiastic reference letters from every person who has been my supervisor.

Clearly what this company did was unethical, but is it illegal?

Only an lawyer who does municipal law in your area or state can really tell you -- If you were "at will" absent race, creed, sex, etc. discrimination, you can be let go for any reason or none at all
