Flood Insurance

What is the name of your state? KY

Is flood insurance required by law? I was told that a grid is used to determine if a house is in a flood zone or not and I remember my mom (I inherited her house) said something one time about it being required where we live due to a creek at the bottom of our driveway that runs along the property, but our house is on a hill (the only way water could reach the house would be if the world flooded like 'Noah's Ark' or something). Can you tell me anything about this?
