I am Thai, my husband is American military. We are stationed in Japan. He is a resident of Florida and we were married there. He has a Japanese girlfriend now and wants a divorce (quickly). I want the divorce too, but I need time to ensure my future is not ruined, so I'd prefer the divorce to take a long time.
I was living in Japan (work visa) before we got married and I want to stay here, but after we are divorced I won't have a visa anymore and the US military won't sponsor me, so I'll have to return to Thailand. I need time to find another Japanese company to sponsor me for a work visa. If I consent to divorce, he can get it done here in about one month. If I don't consent, he will have to file in Florida (contested).
Question: How long will it take him to complete a contested divorce in Florida if the main thing I am contesting is division of assets? My friend thinks it will take at least 4-5 months. Also, will I need a lawyer? I have access to military lawyers, but they cannot represent me, only give advice, and they're not experts on Florida law.
