florida License revoked after DUI in 1979. Driving on valid license ever sense. WHY!?

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Florida

My question involves a driver's license issued by the State of: Florida

I recently received a letter from the DMV in Florida informing me that my license would be revoked if I did not take a Safe Driving Class for $300.00 within 30 days. I had a DUI in 1979 for which I did everything required of me to get my license back. This included taking the prescribed course in 1979!! My license has been valid since and have had no other driving issues. After phone calls that led nowhere, I went to the DMV where they took my license from me!! No one would help me at all and now I am a 69 year old man who depends on driving every day. I cannot afford this class and now they tell me that it will cost over 200 to get my license back after I take a class. How can this be? It is like a bad dream. Anybody that can offer me any advice, phone numbers or anything, I would be very much appreciative.

Perhaps the DUI has nothing to do with the reason for you being required to take a Safe Driving course.

Are you properly insured? Had a lot of accidents or tickets lately? They may be taking your age into consideration as well, and with frequent tickets or accidents, they want to ensure that other drivers are not put at risk by issues that could be presenting themselves at your age.
