What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Ohio

When does FMLA start? Is it the day that we are notified of the leave (given the proper medical certification is provided) or is it the day the doctor's certifies it. Can the time be retroed. For instance someone notifies us on June 15th they need leave and get the paperwork certified by the doctor on the 20th and the doctor indicates that June 12th and 14th were dates in which the doctor saw the patient on the FMLA certification. So would the leave then start on June 12th or the date we were notified by the employee.

FMLA starts the first day the employe misses work due to the medical condition, assuming the doctor certifies the employee was unable to work as of that date. Yes, the time can be retroed and frequently is. The need for medical leave often cannot be forseen (sudden illness, accident) and in such instances, the FMLA certification paperwork will always be completed and submitted after the fact.
