I'm in the same situation as RE Deer with the engagement not working out. One exception was she took the diamond out of the ring and sold it to pay off her debt. I'm wanting to file in small claims court, but would like to know if there's any legal precedence in Oregon for getting (the ring back) or financial compensation if the ring/diamond has been sold.

an engagement ring symbolizes a promise to wed. If no marriage, then the ring goes back to whom ever gave the ring. If it is sold, the person who gave the ring is entitled to that amount plus additional amounts to equal the total purchase price of the ring.

Lawrat,

Thanks for the follow-up. You wouldn't know if there are any places where I can find legal precedence in Oregon. I've been online and have plans to go to the law library this weekend, but if you (or anyone else) knows of existing precedence in Oregon, I'd greatly appreciate it.
