I am enrolled in a Computer Operation Technology course at an accredited school. It has come to my attention that the person in charge of this school has instituted a mandatory internship for all students enrolled in this course. This internship consists of sitting at the receptionist desk and directing phone calls to faculty members, and directing people in the right direction when they enter the lobby and have a question. The class schedule is a full time day class that runs from 7:45 am / 2:15 pm M-F. This “internship” requires each of us to sit at that desk for 3 hours a day while attending school for a period of 2 weeks. We receive absolutely no pay or compensation of any kind. It is my understanding that this was a job previously held by an hourly wage employee. How on earth can this school suddenly decide that they no longer wish to pay someone to answer the phone, and try to pass this off as a legitimate internship that benefits the students? We study Microsoft Office applications, Hardware, Software, Networking, Java, Web Design ect ect. Are there any laws that you are aware of that protect students from being treated as an untapped free labor pool? I find this whole “internship” to be nothing more than a backwards way of cheating me out of a certain portion of my tuition. They tell me that this new “internship” will be graded as a new part of the program…Any helpful ideas you have please..
