What is the name of your state? NY. I have been at my job for 16 years. My parents live in Ga and are getting on in their years. My father has a medical condition that may get worse. Basically they are OK but I have made plans to relocate to Ga from NY in the future. I think it would be better for them if i was there for them when they really are in bad shape in the future.

I plan on of course having a job lined up before i even move to Ga. This will mean taking time off from my current NY job to go on an interview or 2 or 3 o4...

Normally I would think it would not be a big deal to tell my current employer that I am considering relocating and will be seeking employment in Ga. I have known people who were planning moves to other states for various reasons and they separated amicably from the company

My father says i should not tell my current employer about my relocation plans. Instead he says I should just tell them i am going to visit my father who has a medical condition. While this makes partial sense, I think my employer is going to wonder why i am suddenly up and leaving for vacation so much. in the past i was never a big vacation taker.

I don't know what to do. Should i tell them my relocation plans? I think not telling them will create a strain.

And if i do tell them what kinds of problems might my employer cause for me? I already know it will make them mad when they know i will not be there to do the work and they will have to get someone else to do it (we all cover for each other when we all go on vacation). i know they can fire me for any reason or no reason at all.

Can they cause trouble for me?

Nobody here has a clue how your employer will respond if you tell them your plans to relocate and resign when you find a job in NY. You've worked there for 16 years and know the temperment and mindset of your mangagement group; we don't. You need to take whatever YOU feel is the proper course of action.
