Me and a buddy were asked to move in with a mutual friend and told we could live in his home as long as we wanted. This offer included no rent other than taking care of the cleaning and cooking. After only three weeks he has now changed his mind and has told us we have to find somewhere else to live. The problem with moving right now is of a financial nature. The whole reason for this guy asking us to move in was to help us get back on our feet. Me and my buddy are both unemployed at the present time and can't afford the expense of deposit, rent and utilities. We had several discussions with the owner of the house prior to moving in that it could be several months before we would be able to pay any rent but that we would do so once we both got jobs. Otherwise we agreed to pay for our food and long distance phone calls. This was acceptable to the guy we moved in with and no certain amount of time was mentioned as to when we would move out. Do we have any rights to remain here as long as we continue to keep up our end of the agreement? Is an oral agreement binding in the state of Alabama? Can he change the locks and have our belongings removed? What is required for him to evict us? How long would this take if he can evict? Please let me know something ASAP. This is not a very pleasent situation and I do want to move out of here soon but I need to know how much time I / we have. Thanks for any helpful advice you can give.
