What is the name of your state? New Jersey
My mother wants to put some $$ aside for her funeral expenses that will be protected from nursing home (medicaid/medicare) confiscation. Can she just do this with a special account at the bank, or does she have to name a specific funeral home for the $$ to go to? Also, she recently heard that the time limit on giving away her $$ to protect it from being used for nursing home expenses has been changed from 3 years to 5. Is this so?

Just answering your funeral bill question only: go buy a burial plan at a REPUTABLE funeral home. These are expensive but helpful when it comes time. You may also want to check with a REPUTABLE insurance agent and see if she is eligible for term life insurance.

(No, I don't sell insurance.)

In some states, yes.
