i play boardgames that simulate various historical battles. many games and related materials are out of print causing problems when introducing people to the hobby. for instance we technically can't make copies of rules and scenarios available to new hobbiests.

can the rules of a game be rewritten in completely new language to accomplish the identical end result in terms of playability? by identical end result i mean, if an observer watched two separate groups play the game, they would not be able to tell which group used the original rules versus the rewritten rules.

thank you,
