We live in northern Illinois and are currently renting a house that has 2 apartments upstairs. Although we have no lease we pay the entire gas bill. Since the cost of gas has went up we are using space heaters to conserve gas. The landlord just complained that the apartments upstairs are not getting enough heat. The thermostats upstairs do not work so the landlord expects up to keep the heat set at a high enough temp. to heat the upstairs apartments. Are we within our rights to limit the temp. in our apartment?

#1 what the landlord is doing is Illegal....you have no obligation to pay to heat anyone elses apartment..

If the other thermostats are not working thats his problem not yours....AND the gas should be in the landlords Name not yours!

By rights if he wants you to turn up the heat it the cost should be split between the 3 apartments.

So report the landlord to the gas company, and any housing agency because 3 apartments are usually ILLEGAL.... and be prepard for him to evict you..... because you dont have a lease
