gas company has faulty equipment and it's my fault?

What is the name of your state?

I live in the butt ugly state of Kansas.

The gas company called out of the blue and said they would be stopping by to install a new gas meter at our store.

A week later there is a "corrected bill for' $858 sitting in my mailbox. I called to ask why this was and I was told because the old meter was faulty and barely registering usage. I asked how I was responsible for this if it was their equipment that was faulty and how they came up with the figure of $858.97 in one week. What I got was an attitude from an overzealous customer service clerk. I hung up on her.

I have always paid what they bill me but I do not feel their lack of diligence with the upkeep of their equipment makes me liable for this bill.

Please tell me I do not have to pay this.

If you don't want to continue getting gas, then no you don't have to pay it.

If you want to continue heating your house with gas, then yes, you are going to have to pay it.

Precisely the question I was going to pose :D

How long had the meter been broken ?
What did they use to compute that 'adjustment' ?
As for an accounting of how they came to that figure IN WRITING.
