My partner is a French man. I want to Marry him in the United States and live in NYC. I know NY does not offer gay marriage (yet Mexico City does?!) but I live in Massachusetts now and we'd get Married here. Would it all be for show or have any legal binding?? Thanks

Are you trying to sponsor his residency in the US? If so, it's not going to happen. US Immigration does not recognize same-sex marriage for the purpose of immigration benefits.

Yes that was the plan

Well, That is a shame. I assume that means it falls into a federal realm and gay marriage would have to be accepted as a US of A law. I doubt this will happen in our lifetime.

Verifying from MA.

While the Feds cannot prevent MA from recognizing gay marriage, MA cannot force the Federal government to recognize it.

I think it WILL happen in our lifetime....people are eventually going to realize that legalizing gay marriage isn't going to materially affect people who are NOT gay and get over their bigotry. But it might not be for another 10-20 years.

Then again, I'm an optimist. I thought Obama was going to do more for gay rights then he has done since taking office too.
