What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

If a possibly slanderous remark existed in my disciplinary file at my college university is there a way I could get a copy of my disciplinary file?

I underwent a conduct review a few months ago and afterwards reviewed my conduct file, which contained a number of undated documents, many of which had also had no names attached to them- there was no way to identify who had written the report. I also noticed that a previous conduct matter that I had been involved was not documented- there was nothing in my file to show anything had ever happened. One of the documents stated that a campus police officer said I was mentally unstable, although I had only contact with the police officer one time and nothing of consequence happened.

Is there a way I can request a copy of my file? I am considering legal action and am worried that the residential office at my college may tamper or otherwise wreak my conduct file.

The whole issue

The reason why I posted this question was because a larger issue. I am including that information now and hopefully someone might give me some advice.:) I would like to know if legal action might be appropriate or by what legal channels I might use if possible.

Last year I was found responsible by by university office or residential life for breaking community standards by cursing at my housemate and cursing around her. The situation came to a head with an arguement between my housemate boyfriend, who is a staff member who lives on campus. My housemates boyfriend challenged me to a fight and I called the campus police. No one was arrested-everyone was left to act on their own accord.

When I went to speak to the community director about what happened I was told my roommate had been to speak with the community director earlier in the day. The community director did not want to speak about what happened but on how to make the future better. I asked for the staff member to be brought in and administrative action to be taken and the community director said she didn't know what I meant or who I was supposed to contact. I offered to try and work things out with my housemate but she wanted to move out (Co-ed is allowed in the suites my college.) The situation took about a month to be settled and I had to have a disciplinary meeting with the (suprise) the same community director. My housemate was allowed to move out of our campus apartments, breaking our month-to-month lease early, there had been two or three seperate occasions I had been told I might be sued. A rental management company runs the part of student housing I had lived in separate from the Res. Life office. After looking at my discpline file I found about four documents that said supposedly what had happened, including a campus police officers comment that I was unstable, but no name was attributed to the documents and they where not documented. At the follow-up to my discplinary meeting I found out that my housemate was found responsible for her guest (the campus staff member from Admissions and records) but that nothing would happen to the staff member. The community director's behavior was unprofessional at times with her admitting that she had no experience in the field except that she was a certified life coach and telling personal stories about her mom.

The situation has turned into being put on permant housing probation, being kicked off campus for not being able to pay rent and being in debt because my roommate trying to twist my arm by canceling out lease two weeks before classes ended. I not allowed to move back on campus until I repay the debt and I am on financial aid. The staff member was supposed to be held accountable according to our housing lease as well and nothing ever happened.

Do I have cause for legal action maybe?
