What is the name of your state? NC

My grandfather, who lives in IL, paid off my student loans, which came to over $16,000. He wrote the check directly to the loan company. Does he or I need to worry about paying a gift tax?

He may need to file a gift tax return, but won't pay any taxes. Is he married? If so, he doesn't even need to file the return. He & his wife can "split" the gift so that each gave you $8,000, well under the annual limit of $11k.
