Going to Trial

What is the name of your state? California

I received a summons for court because of unpaid hospital bills. I answered the summons went to court and the judge set a trial date. The trial date is this month. Question is: Could I call the lawyer or send a certified letter stating I am able to pay payment arrangements? Can I go to trial and try and get the judge to knock down what I owe? If I go to trial will I have to pay any other fees. What if I dont have the money? I am a full time student with no other income except for financial aid and grants. What would be the best choice for me at this point? I can't affod a lawyer. When I went to court I just stood there not really saying anything because I didn't want to hurt my case. If I have to go to trial what can I say or do in my defense?

Any advice please.

You are NOT going to trail unless you and the judge are hiking the Grand Canyon. It's TRIAL!
