What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Illinois

Divorced mother of two minor children passed away and left her mother as beneficiary to her life insurance and retirement fund. Grandmother is spending money and not providing any monetary assistance for raising of children. Can anything be done?

No. Life insurance policies pay out to the beneficiary without going through probate. The money is grandma's to do with as she pleases.

Tell grandma to have fun with the money. If it was meant for the benefit of the children, then mom would have put in trust for them. It doesn't appear to be the intention.

Agree with the other responders. If the deceased named her mother as the beneficiary, then the money is hers to do with as she wishes.
