My mom is very ill and has been diagnoses with cancer. She will have surgery in two weeks. She'd like to see my daughter before then, but my daughter is scheduled to fly to visit her father the day after school ends (a week from Friday). They are very close. I am contemplating having my daughter miss the last 3 days of school so that I can take her to visit her grandmother. I spoke to her teacher who said it was no big deal, that there was little real "work" being done.

Since I have a very tense relationship with my ex who recently sued my for custody (last December), I am worried about doing anything that might be used against me. Would a judge look at askance at a child missing school given such circumstances? Should I say anything to the ex about this?
Thanks.

As long as you've cleared it with her teacher (and or the principal), I can't see how this would be held against you. So sorry for your circumstances.

Thanks for answering. Do you think it would be better to head off any reaction on the part of the ex by informing him? I thought about writing him, "My mom is sick, and we're going to visit, so she'll miss some school. I've cleared it with the teacher."
