What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MD

Hi,
Any advice I can get is of great help. I am doing this for a friend of mine who does not have access to internet. I also hope this goes in the right place

Currently my friend is 25 years old and lives with her mother and sister. Her father is currently out in Nebraska. Her Grandmother has legal guardianship and refuses to relinquish it to her father who is willing to take full legal guardianship of his daughter. My friend would like to know what are the steps that need to be taken for her father to get legal guardianship. Also, does the grandmother have the right to sue for custody.

She really wants to go but the grandmother has threatened that if she does she will take her granddaughters cat and have it put down. I was also putting up funds to get her the ticket to travel out there. Is what I'm doing legal? Would the grandmother have the right to sue me for helping her granddaughter get to her Dads.

Thanks again.

okay. tad bit confusing.

let's try to clear this up. for the purpose of this thread...let's call mom, MOM, dad, DAD, maternal grandmother MGM, maternal grandfather MGP, paternal grandmother PGM, paternal grandfather PGF. just to clarify. thanks.

so, who has legal custody of the child in question? where does mom live? where does dad live? has paternity been established? who exactly are you? who has legal guardianship of who? who wants legal guardianship? did dad consent to the legal gaurdianship? was child social services involved? is this a temp guardianship?

Ok to start off I am just a friend of the child in question. The child in this case is the 25 year old. Paternity has been established both mother and fathers names are on the original birth certificate. MOM lives in MD with the child in question as well as another child. DAD lives in Nebraska. The current Legal guardianship is with the MGM. DAD would like legal guardianship. I am not sure of the circumstances as to how MGM got custody.

was child social services involved? I am not sure.
Is this a temp guardianship? This child has been under the grandmothers care for her whole life 25 yrs.

The 25 year old is the "child"?

Has she been declared incompetent or unable to care for herself?

If not, she's free to go wherever she pleases - taking her cat with her.

If your friend is in need of supervision/care, then dad would need to petition the courts for guardianship.

This child is an adult and can do as she likes unless she's been declared mentally incompetent. Why would you refer to a 25 year old woman as a child?
