Grandparents rights

i am from north carolina - i would like to know if the father is living with his parents can the parents who is the grandparents take away the rights of the mother? they are not married and both parents are of age.(18&20) there has not been any abuse or neglect on neither part. the child has been living with the father since it was a few months old. there has not been any court involvement.

please help.

the grandparents would have to prove the parent unfit to take the child away from them.
