I received a green card 26 years ago as a Canadian. 14 months ago I applied to have it renewed. I have no criminal record. No response yet. 2 months ago I sent in a form requesting an update. No response yet. I would like to cross into Canada to visit, but my green card was taken at application time. I only have a copy. My mother is old and ill. Am I at risk of not being able to re-enter? Will it do any good to revisit the local office?

Did you ever obtain citizenship or did you stay with permanent residence? Either way, you should have no problems leaving and re-entering the US borders. But you will need proof at the border. I am not sure if the copy is good enough. I would give them a call and see what they say.

Thank you for your help. I did not ever become a citizen. When I came over, permanent residency was almost the equivalent of citizenship with the exception of jury duty and voting, neither of which was a hobby of mine. I guess I'll go down and talk to the local office. Thanks again.
