What is the name of your state? Im from NJ, currently active duty USMC stationed in hawaii 21 years old. on a 4 year contract for infantry MOS. Ive been in over a year and a half, been deployed to Iraq.
Ive been having bad lung problems just latley, I was diagnosed and treated for childhood asthma many years ago (which my recruiter left out of the contract, but he knew about it [at the time of enlistment I had no lung problems at all]). Im an extremly active person, i taught martial arts for years, played high school hockey ect...
I joined the Marines and was able to blow away everyone physicaly, boot camp was a joke physicaly. I was maxing out our PT tests easy. As boot camp ended i caught a bad case of pnumonia and... knowing how boot camp is i was givin some meds and basicly told to suck it up... ok no problem.
About 2 months later in SOI (school of infantry) i started having more and more lung problems, my 3 mile run time started to steadily drop. I finaly went to the medical clinic around the last couple weeks there, and they pretty much blew me off (gussing they thought i was just looking for an easy way out)
after that got stationed to Hawaii, and my lungs got worse, i sucked it up for a little while, finaly i was just plain falling out of runs. The platoon corpsman refurred me to the local NAvy hospital to get me checked out. After many many visits to the hospital I was diagnosed with I beleive "cronic mild asthma" or somthing along those lines (also saw an allergy specalist, apparently i have a few, mold/pollen/that kind of stuff), they basicly just gave me some more inhallers and pills and let me go on my way.
month or two go by, and im still not feeling any better at all, run times have not improved, if not gotten worse. By this time we are getting ready to Deploy to Iraq, and im getting anxious, thinking theres no way ill be able to make it through physicaly, esspecialy as a grunt. So i start trying a little harder to get a non deployable status or a medical discharge, i do all this within the period of the month before leaving for Iraq, and basicly im being told... "sorry, we see you have a problem, but its just too late to change anything"
And Ive just returned form that deployment, I made it through better than i thought even though i was almost ussing 2x the recomended dosage of drugs on some occasions just to get by, on a couple occasions I had to completly stand down from long posts or patrols due to my condition, but it was never bad enough that i needed a MedEvac, but it was close.
Now ive just come back from post deployment leave, and I realy am trying to look into getting discharged, as I am serriously conserned for my health. At this point, ive started lifting weights more often, trying to get some stamina back, but i still do not pass the PFT run, although i DO barley pass the overall PFT because i still max out on sit ups and pull ups. (flawed system)
After all that background, what are the chances i would acctualy be able to get a discharge? It seems like all the doctors I go to Just jerk me around, and tell me everything will be fine, when in all acctuality my symptoms are the same if not worse.
Thanks for any information or Help , i realy appreciate it.
