What is the name of your state?..la.......This is for LadyInRed...I contacted c/bureaus for verification of debts to Providian and Cap 1...they sent me back 'UPDATED' responce. Should I just call these people and try to negotiate settlement myself? Providian has me down for (2 )accts. owed and I do owe them on (1)..never had accts. with Cap 1....I've disputed these to no avail...What should I do?

I'm not LNR -- but I can answer part of your question.

Cap One purchased a bunch of accounts from Providian. That might be why Cap One is listed.

As to the rest of your question -- I would need a lot more info which sounds like LNR already has.

Do you have copies of your credit reports? If so, read to see if it says the account has been sold. If so, you don't need to deal with that one.

They are not going to send you any proof of anything. Eventually they will send you a court summons. That is the only time you will be able to make them prove anything and it is an ordeal.

Do you have old statements? If so, they will have the account number. Try to track the account numbers on the credit reports.

When you talk to a creditor ask the following questions.

Who is the original creditor?
What is the date of last activity?
Has the account been charged off? If so, when was it charged off?
Are you the original creditor? If not, who owns the debt today?

The answers to those questions should help you figure out what is what.

Are we talking about a lot of money here?

OK. Good, you are starting to figure it out. But, I sense that you are pretty ill prepared to try to negotiate this by yourself. Maybe it would be worth the money to hire someone to help you?
