I started a part time job in Jan/00. I was hired to assist the Village Clerk at city hall. I was to do the same job as she except that she wouldn't show me what to do.
After three months she started locking file drawers, hiding things, and talking about me to others. She often made comments on my weight right to my face. There was a luncheon for the city hall workers that she would not allow me to attend. She did offer to get me a plate and wanted to know how much food I needed or if I needed two plates.
Last week I walked out of the job after 5 months. She embarrassed me in front of a customer and the cleaning girl. She made a comment about my weight and then danced around asking me if she had offended me. I did not answer her while the other people were in the office. When they left she asked if she had made me mad again. I had started to quit on the previous Tuesday but I felt I needed to discuss my issues with her first to give her a chance. She said I blew things out of proportion and was over reacting. After her display on Thursday morning, she asked me if she had made me mad again. I told her that her comment was rude and uncalled for and her question didn't warrant
an answer. She said I could have answered her with "No". I told her that I couldn't because I was offended and to answer "No" would have been a lie. She again told me I was over reacting and blowing it out of proportion. I walked out right then. She was constantly comparing herself to me and saying she was fat. I am heavy, but not grossly obese. I have never had anyone treat me like this. I had two witnesses that day. I also found out that the cleaning girl had heard my boss make comments to me before. When I talked to my boss on Tuesday, I didn't say anything about the weight comments, I was more concerned about the nasty way she had been treating me.
Maybe I should have said something, who knows?
Should I contact a lawyer and see if I have grounds to sue her for Harrassment?
My boss is already talking badly about me to the city hall board members and the mayor. I talked to the mayor and told my side. She got verification of my story from the cleaning girl. She made the comment to me that my boss had put the city hall in a pickle with her actions.
Would there be a problem with a lawsuit between city hall and an hourly employee? My boss was an elected official.
Thanks, CD
