You can trim anything that is on your side of the property line.

You really don't explain what your neighbor gets upset about to the point of calling police. Is it that you enter his/her property to trim, or that when you trim the top of the hedge the cuttings drop to the other side of the property? More details would help.

Are you sure the hedges are on the property line, or do they belong to your neighbor?

My neighbor has hedges near their property line, and I may mow the grass up to them on my side and pull weeds out of my side if they do not get around to it. But I do not prune them at all.

yes i am possitive shw even sent me a letter telling me her grandfather planted the hedges. the surveyer stake is right in the middle. she even went to her nextdoor neighbors house and started yelling at them for cutting theirs. her grandfather planted those also, he must have owned all the property 20yrs ago

I cannot imagine what this neighbor is freaking out about. You're maintaining something that her grandfather planted 20yrs ago. My advice is to cut only the portion that is situated within your property line, and let the rest get bushy and die off. If she continues to freak out, offer her a haircut with your hedge-trimmers!
