I think that there is not nearly enough information provided by lal to know what is going on - but I would be willing to hazard a guess that the mom is not happy about whatever it is that occurred.

I think you will find it true in any of the states that unless emancipated a minor is not competent to enter into a contract.
But as Q mentions there could be circumstances here which could otherwise confirm the settlement. For instance the appointment of a guardian ad litem for such a specific purpose.
