What is the name of your state? CA
I bought a used car for $900, last week. The girl told me there was no problem with the car, except the rear wheel on the driver's side. I drove it - the car bounced a bit, and she said it was because of the wheel. I was really desperate for a car, so I paid her - $900 cash ( I don't know anything about cars, obviously) . She made me sign an "sold as if" paper, and we completed the transfer of title.
the car was not smogged - or registered. so I had it smogged & it passed. But the hood started smoking and the mechanic told me it was a radiator problem: they changed the radiator and fan, and I paid $500. But AFTER THAT, on the way home, the car started making a terrible noise & bouncing. Took it to another mechanics who told me the transmission was dying + oil leak etc = over $2000 of repairs, which I don't have as I put all my savings in the car. That was yesterday.
Today, I went to the DMV (I was crying a lot & they were really nice with me) to finish registering the car, in hopes of selling it for parts. They told me that the girl who sold me the car (and who hadn't registered it since november) had $900 of unpaid parking tickets that I would be responsible for - but they had me sign a waiver for non-responsibility.
They gave me a red sticker with a "5" on it to put on the car, to prevent it from being towed for those unpaid tickets & registration, until May. Am I really protected ?
The transfer of title is not fully completed - because I want to try & sell the car for parts asap - basically, her name is still on the title. I tried calling the girl, but she doesn't answer - the address she put on the title is not where I bought the car. SO:
1- Am I safe, now that I signed a waiver at the DMV ? or am I responsible for her unpaid tickets ?
2- Having signed this "sold as is" paper, can I do anything ?
3- I've had offers from a shady guy to buy the car for parts. How can I be sure that he doesn't put me in more trouble ? How long am I responsible for the car after I signed the transfer to new buyer ?
4- Should I put this car on my insurance, even though I'm not driving it (and I'm broke) ? Just in case I sell it & new buyer does something stupid with it ? Would I be held responsible, for example, if he was late in sending his part of the transfer to the DMV ?
HELP - I'm seriously thinking about giving up on the US, the way it seems to have given up on me - and giving up on myself as well, because I've been so naive & stupid . I'm just fed up with this kind of crap (although I guess theres crap everywhere, right ?). Help, I'm lost and very depressed, and I feel stupid Please help me ?
