Okay long part of the story short my mother in law has had major problems with drugs in the past and has traded like 8 cars for drugs in the past. My father in law and her are getting a separation...and she has been drug free for about a year. All of a sudden she took off to the city and is back into the drugs. She has 4 birds, 2 cats, and 1 dog. After three days of her being gone my father in law and I went down and got a key from her old roommate and we went in and fed the animals and he took the dog. The police said that was okay for the wellbeing of them. BUT...they are going through a separation and what we want to know is how does he get out of doing this. Like what happens to the animals when someone disappears can the police come in a take them to the shelter? It has now been a week and 1 day and she still is gone. I think my father in law should not be involved and I don't want the pets to suffer but it was her responsibility to the pets so I guess what I am asking is what should we do with the pets and how long should we wait for her? Should we find homes for them or take them to the SPCA or what should we do without getting in trouble for taking her pets that she had abandoned...Help this is really a touchy subject.

call the local animal control officer and have the pets taken into custody.

Definately call animal control. Were the birds and cats left with food and water? Dehydration can kill pretty quickly.
