I am 6 months pregnant and have a baby due in July 2002, recently the father and I have split up and I was wondering how early in the state of Pennsylvania, you are able to sue for child support and how the custody laws work as well. The father is currently unemployed. Please let me know anything you know. Thanks!:o

My response:

As soon as you give birth to a live baby, the State of PA immediately obtains jurisdiction in matters of child support. You can obtain brochures from the Department of Social Services concerning your rights, and the child's rights, to support. I would suggest you go to their offices now, rather than later.
