California
I was recently hired to work as a banquet food server. At the time I was hired I was told that my starting pay was to be $11.00 per hour.Plus any tip(if there is any) that may be given to the servers by whichever catering company that hired us. There is not usually a tip at the bigger banquets, but occasionally a server is given one at a smaller private party.
My problem is this -when I recieved my first paycheck it reads that I am only recieving the state minimum wage ($6.75 per hour) & that the amount of $4.25 per hour has been recieved as a tip(s).
I feel as if something is not quite right about this,Why wasn't I told that my wages are $6.75 + $4.25 to be claimed as tips which equal a total of $11.00 per hour? I think that it was very misleading & at no time was minimum wage mentioned or the way the pay rate would show on my check. Is this some type of tax evasion or write off for the company?
Thanks in advance for any input!
