First, I'd like to say that I"m in the U.S. Air Force in Japan and I'm trying to handle a issue for my parents that live in NJ. I appreciate any and all advice given.

In Oct 05, A shooting happended on my parent's property; two males that have been told by the home owner and through residents (my sister) of the home to stay off the property. The victim will be referred to as Male #1, the shooter as Male #2. Now, my mother has received a letter notifying her (my father name was not on the letter) through her negligence, a law suit will be filed against her. At the time of the shooting, the home owners were both sleep until of course the gun shots were heard.

Male #1 is the one filing the law suit on the advice of his lawyer. According to an eye witness, the two were fist-fighting and then Male #2 went his car and grabbed his gun and returned and shot Male #1. I understand that through some legal way, my parents are responsible for the injuries but morally; how is this right? My parents have been in this home for 28 years and now it could be taken away by some jerk who is out for a payday.

Male #1 has a child with my niece, she doesn't live with my parents. He was just suppose to drop off the child and leave. Male #2 was outside of the property visiting my niece. I know this is a little confusing but I'm worried that my parents will lose everything over the ignorance of youth.

What legal grounds do my parents have to stand on?What is the name of your state?
