In the news today, a father and step mother were arrested for child endangerment after leaving their 9 or 10 year old (I've seen both ages given) in charge of their 5 year old, while they went off on a Las Vegas vacation.

I was just wondering, at what age can kids be left in charge?
Q: I was just wondering, at what age can kids be left in charge?

A: When they have sense enough to take care of themselves...probably forty or forty-five years old.

:D You might me right, but I was looking for a legal answer.

(Though it is the "Dear Abby", beating up on the posters, fun stuff, that keeps me coming back here :) )

I don't know if Cali has a specific age, I know that Mi does not. It is up to the powers that be (child protec. services usually) to make a determination based upon the facts for a specific case.

In Mass it is 12....but I don't think that means you could take off for the weekend and leave the kid alone! A few hours after school or something. My 3 year old has PDD...and I wouldn't leave my 16 year old (whom I trust very much) in charge of her for more than a few hours...Its just too much to handle... These "parents" need a swift kick in the as*!

More in today's San Jose Mercury. Apparently the "dad's" sister spoke with him and his only reply was "I screwed up". The older son was quoted as being pretty mad that they took care of the dogs but not the kids. As the Merc also said "What happened in Vegas this time didn't stay in Vegas".
