We did NOT join the homeowner's association
-- never signed anything. Now, we have gotten at least three letters saying we owe $25 to the association [per year]. The money is not the concern. They think they can put a lien on the house. Since we signed nothing, is their recourse to take us to court?

If you are saying that you never signed any separate documents to join the Homeowners Association (HA) apart from the various documents signed to buy your home, I believe you. However, amidst all the documents you did sign, there may be something in there that did sign you up. Or, part of the Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions may require you to join the HA. Only if one or both of those conditions are met, would I think that they can put a lien on your home.
