Help! We hired a contractor nine months ago. We originally had a 500 sq foot addition in mind which we got a bid for. We then decided to increase our addition and the bid went up to $150,000., which was fine. No one has even hammered a nail yet and the contractor has come back (nine months later) and said that the guy who gave us our bid for $150,000. (a detailed written bid) was underbidding a lot so they fired him. They are now saying that construction costs have risen dramatically, and the bid has now increased by $78,000. MORE than the original estimate. Can they do this?
